JACKSONVILLE HARMONY SHOW CHORUS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2010, 7:00 PM DONATION TICKETS: $10 ADULTS, $5 STUDENTS PALM COAST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2009-2010 CONCERT SERIES The Jacksonville Harmony Show Chorus visited Palm Coast for a concert in 2006 and we are delighted to welcome it for another concert. This barbershop chorus of women singers is under the direction of Ann Gooch. It performs exciting a cappella musical arrangements in close four-part harmony, a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody. Their music comes from movies and Broadway shows, the land of jazz and blues, the Big Band era, and popular modern tunes. Barbershop is a “melting pot” product of African-American musical devise, European hymn-singing culture, and an American tradition of recreational art music. This unique American folk art of barbershop harmony evolved much the same way as many of our other forms of vocal music. The popular songs during the period between the 1860’s and the 1920’s were prime candidates for barbershop harmony and helped this musical form evolve into a highly stylized art form requiring as much quality and control as is necessary for singing any other types of choral music. The Jacksonville Harmony Show Chorus has been a vibrant part of Jacksonville’s Arts scene for over forty years. It is affiliated with Sweet Adelines International which has choruses in all fifty states and a chain of membership around the world. It is dedicated to advancing the barbershop harmony art form through education and performance. This acclaimed chorus of seventy plus is consistently excelling on the competition stage and in community performances. It was proud to perform in Carnegie Hall in February of 2009. It currently holds the fourth place mid-size chorus position in the world after an international competition in Nashville in October, 2009. It is headed to Seattle in October to represent Region 9 (Florida) in a 2010 International Competition. All of the performances of this group are versatile and yet sophisticated with a diverse group of women representing many backgrounds and ages, with delightful singing, acting, dancing and costumes that will keep you smiling and entertained throughout this concert. The concert series is proud to present Norma Salt as the visual artist exhibiting her work at this concert. It is always a pleasure to highlight a local artist. The concert will be held in the sanctuary of Palm Coast United Methodist Church at 5200 Belle Terre Parkway. Free childcare and parking assistance will be provided. Donation tickets are available in the church office and at the door. Please call 386-445-2098 for more information
