OPENING GALA, STEEL ORCHESTRA
POSITIVE VIBRATIONS YOUTH STEEL ORCHESTRA
Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra (PVYSO) has been
sharing its melodies nationally and internationally since 1966,
starting in the suburban basement of its founder and present
Executive Director, Lorna Green. With a year, the group
relocated to Hyattsville and the rest is history. This young
energetic group has performed for Olympic torch ceremonies and at
countless private and public venues and with many world renowned
musicians including steelpan virtuoso Liam Teague, Robert Greenidge
and saxophonist Auturo Tappin. The students attend the Academy
hosted by the Cultural Academy for Excellence in the greater
Washington, D.C. area. They study music theory and practical
steelpan pieces, as well as learn a wide variety of music arranged
by the academy's highly credentialed instructors. They are
given theory and practical examinations annually. The students
are also tutored in mathematics, language arts and science and have
an opportunity to work with an artist-in-residence.
Scholarship programs and life skill components, including community
service hours, are also part of the extensive program of the
Cultural Academy for Excellence. This impressive group is one
of the best steel orchestras in the country with a list of
impressive rewards and it is a fitting spectacular for our Opening
Gala.
