FLAGLER YOUTH ORCHESTRA CONCERT

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 2010, 7:00 PM

January is Youth Month for the Palm Coast United Methodist Church Concert Series! Talented local youth will be featured in our concerts and throughout church activities in January.

The Flagler Youth Orchestra will join us for a concert in mid January.  This is a joint project of the Flagler County School District and the Friends of the Youth Orchestra. It is an after-school program that teaches students to play violin, viola, cello and doublebass in orchestral and chamber settings. Any student, third grade and up, who lives in Flagler County is welcome to join, free of charge. Instrument scholarships are provided to those in need. Classes are held twice a week on the Indian Trails Middle School campus for the entire school year in a player-friendly environment. All Youth Orchestra students participate every year in three large-scale public performances at the Flagler Auditorium, and many participate in additional performances at festivals and during the holidays.

Students are led by several dynamic teachers, including Music Director and Conductor Jonathan May, who's worked with young musicians for the past three decades and has developed orchestras throughout the United States, including the Trinity Preparatory School in Orlando, the Park-Maitland Elementary School and in Leesburg. May frequently leads young musicians in concert tours in Europe and Australia, and he is the Artistic Director of the Music Academy at Schloss-Ort in Austria. May is regularly featured as an all-state conductor and a frequent conductor of regional string festivals. He serves on national and state boards as an advocate for arts education, especially for young people. “If kids at a young age have the ability to be flexible musically,” May says, “they’ll be able to do it forever, so we are trying to instill this in them. Once they start reading they start blossoming and it really becomes a language for them.”

The Flagler Youth Orchestra’s artistic staff also includes three additional teachers, Jack Jeffe, Justin McCulloch, and Linda Van Buren, who bring a combined 75 years of teaching experience to Flagler students. Celebrating its fifth season with 275 students and a new partnership with Flagler-Palm Coast High School wind, brass and percussions players, the Flagler Youth Orchestra is committed to fostering musical excellence, cultural diversity for our young community and a lifelong love of music for its young performers.

The Concert Series is proud to include art students of Edward Beckett at Flagler Palm Coast High School as Visual Artists for this concert.

The concert will be held in the sanctuary of Palm Coast United Methodist Church at 5200 Belle Terre Parkway.  Free childcare and parking assistance will be provided. A Freewill Donation will be collected. This concert is made possible in part with a Cultural Arts Grant from the City of Palm Coast.  A reception with the members of the orchestra will follow the concert
